Wilsen was an artist and engineer. He was sent to the the Dutch East Indies in 1849 to make drawings of the architectural details and reliefs at Borobudur. He later wrote and illustrated a book titled Uit De Koningin van het Oosten: Verhaal uit Batavia (The Queen of the East: Story from Batavia) in 1873.
