Washington, D. C., May 15, 1866 retroactive to December 1, 1865, naming H(enry). F. Hawkes a Brevet Major in the Subsistence Department, on vellum with stamped signatures of President Johnson and Secretary Staunton; presented in plain wooden frame.

DOA 21 x 17 in.

Found in a Richmond, Virginia estate.

During the Civil War Hawkes served in Ohio Infantry as an enlisted man before transferring to the US Volunteers Commissary in November 1862.

Light wear, fine condition.
