Wooden Box Attributed to Confederate POWs at Camp Chase, Ohio

Mahogany veneer with brass hardware, the interior lid and inset tray lined with gold-toned paper; an enclosed manuscript label reads,"This box made by Confederate prisoners at Camp Chase near Columbus O. during the War of the Rebellion. It was made for my father and by him given to me. S. A. Mendenhall. Verbal history has the original owner of the box being Nathan B. Marple, a sutler serving Camp Chase. The recipient was Marple's daughter, Susan Allen (Marple) Mendenhall (1849-1916). Retained in the box are the following: a rectangular silver pin reading "N. B. Maples (sic)" and a silver disc with an NBM monogram; a 20th century Ohio State University silver ring; three small 20th century silver buckles, two with NBM initials and one marked with an "M"; two 1920s letters from family to M. B. Marlple, IV in Portland, Orgeon.
