Charles Volkmar (American, 1841-1914), Pair of Ormolu Mounted Art Pottery Vases

Circa 1877-1879, impressed mark to underside for the Charles Houry Pottery of Paris, France, both signed "Charles Volkmar" and handsomely painted with cows watering amidst a Barbizon style landscape, earthenware with underglaze slip painting in brilliant blues, greens, yellows and whites, gilt bronze ormolu mounts to rim and base.

HOA 17.75 in.

These vases are very similar in decoration to a large single vase, lacking mounts, now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York. This vase is illustrated in American Art Pottery: The Robert A. Ellison Jr. Collection, published in 2018, figure 37. A pair of vases, circa 1881 and made in Brooklyn, New York, are in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum, they too feature forested landscapes with cows watering.

Stable crazing; some minor roughness to base of vase from mounts.
