A founder of the American Arts & Crafts Movement, Mathews was a highly regarded artist, craftsman, and architect when he and his wife were commissioned to design with the decorative elements of the Savings Union Bank of San Francisco. Opened in 1911, the bank included two monumental bronze doors designed by Mathews and incorporating four figures symbolizing the development of California - first the Indian, then the Franciscan missionary, the miner, and a youth to symbolize the future.
