The daughter of artist Charles Ephraim Burchfield, Martha Burchfield Richter was a celebrated artist in her own right. She worked primarily in watercolors and favored scenes of rural America and the natural world. The present watercolor was likely painted in the late 1940s, following her marriage to Henry Richter.
