Pen and brown ink over graphite, on laid paper, sheet bears a watermark that appears to read "GB" along the left sheet edge, with label from outside gallery affixed to framing, pencil inscription in unknown hand to verso, matted and framed.

Sheet Size 6 3/8 x 6 5/8 in.; DOA 10.25 x 10.5 in.

According to the label affixed to frame verso from outside gallery, this drawing is from the former collection of Dr. John Coakley Lettsom, an English physician and philanthropist who lived in Europe and the West Indies.

Hogarth did several works depicting the Scottish rebel, Simon Lord Lovat. Most recognizable among these and related to the drawing offered here is Hogarth's etching from 1746, where he depicts Lord Lovat seated in a chair shortly before he was beheaded for high treason.

Some toning, foxing/several stains, and folds to sheet; some wear at sheet edges.
