Born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Joe Wardwell now lives and works in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. He received his BFA in Painting and Art History from the University of Washington, Seattle, and his MFA in Painting from Boston University.

He has twelve solo exhibitions since 2004 and been featured in over 30 group exhibitions since 1999. In 2017, Mass MOCA in North Adams, Massachusetts commissioned his first large scale wall drawing.
