Born in New York, Katheryn Woods Kortheuer settled in Charlotte, North Carolina with her husband, Dayrell Kortheuer, in 1938. Both artists, they began teaching art at the Mint Museum that year. Katheryn rose through the ranks of the museum, serving as director from 1956 to 1959, and retiring as a curator in 1973. She was instrumental in building the reputation of the museum as a highlight of fine arts in the Southeast.
