The son of a well-known musician, Gilchrist Jr. was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Cecilia Beaux, Thomas Anshutz and William Merritt Chase. He also benefitted from the critique of Winslow Homer, a close friend found in Prout's Neck, Maine.

Hole in upper right corner with associated paint loss; stretcher marks; darkened varnish; some paint loss due to rubbing from frame along left edge of canvas; small paint flake to sitter's proper left elbow.
