Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Koopman studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and in Paris between 1887 and 1892 at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He was an active member of the expat and artist community in Montparnasse in Paris for most of his life. Koopman also found much inspiration in the coastal community of Étaples, France, which is likely the setting for this painting.
