Martha Walter was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under William Merritt Chase. She continued her studies with Chase at his summer school in Shinnecock, Long Island. In 1903 Walter was awarded the prestigious Cresson Scholarship for European Travel, allowing her to study in France, Italy, Spain and Holland. After spending several years in Paris with other women artists, she returned to the United States just before WWI.

Martha Walter lived in New York City, Gloucester, and Philadelphia, but continued to travel throughout her lifetime. Best known for her bright and charming plein air paintings, her paintings are in numerous prominent public collections including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris.
