DOA 10.5 x 18.5 in.

Born in Boston, Cowell painted maritime scenes in Nova Scotia, New York, Nahant, Massachusetts, and Narragansett, Rhode Island. He also painted some scenes along the Great Lakes while living in Chicago. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Edward Moran and John Faulkner, as well as being greatly influenced by the work of Alfred Thompson Bricher and Francis Augustus Silva.

Scattered retouch visible under UV light; yellowing varnish; allover craquelure; puncture with associated paint loss to sky; minor rubbing to frame.
