Three Early Navajo Beadwork Bags

1920s or earlier, the first of deerskin, its face incorporating a small pouch fastened with a hammered silver button, decorated with floral patterns, an eight-pointed star and a Christian cross, the back with a traditional beadwork swastika pattern (11 in. without fringe)(minor bead losses to borders; three small spots of glue residue on back from a previous mounting); the second of calfskin, both sides with sparkling faceted beads, one side with a cruciform design within a border and the other side with a traditional swastika pattern (the border with 2 in. of total loss; the bottom with a tiny split and discoloration); a tiny keepsake bag of deerskin with beaded fringe and a beaded cross on one side (with fringe 3.5 in.)(overall good condition).

Private North Carolina Collection

From the collection of Mrs. Harriet Nottingham, an Ohio missionary serving the Navajos of Shiprock, New Mexico in the 1920s. Tribal members presented her with the artifacts here as a farewell gesture of thanks and goodwill upon her departure from the reservation.
