To include a print of William Pennington's celebrated photograph of two Navajo men on horseback with Shiprock in the background, first quarter 20th century (7.5 x 9.5 in.) (loss to lower right corner; upper left corner present, but detached); three J. R. Willis photographs from "Art Srudies of Indian Life" (one unmarked as such), Gallup, New Mexico, circa 1920, with all three signed "Mrs. H. Nottingham," one image likely showing the missionary standing behind a row of worried Navajo girls with brooms (10 x 6 in.) (age toning; a few stains); 30 small snapshots of reservation inhabitants, some identified, mostly children (five images with tape on the back from previous mounting; some with minor losses, though most images in good estate condition); five postcards, one inscribed to Mrs. Nottingham from an admiring Navajo girl; plus, two religious books written phonetically in Navajo, to include: God Bîzad (New York: American Bible Society, 1917), small 8vo (7.25 in.), the front free endpaper inscribed, "Mrs W M Nottingham / Shiprock / New Mexico / 1-20-26", 262 pages, linen over paper (owner's initials on front cover, else very good condition); Nihi Nihiyin (Our Own Songs) Collection of Christian Songs in the Navaho Language, Rev. L. P. Brink, ed. (Toadlena, New Mexico: Privately Published, 1922), 63 pages, 8vo (8 in.), card covers (bound upside down! Else, very good condition).

Private North Carolina Collection

From the collection of Mrs. Harriet Nottingham, an Ohio missionary serving the Navajos of Shiprock, New Mexico in the 1920s. Tribal members presented her with the artifacts here as a farewell gesture of thanks and goodwill upon her departure from the reservation.
