Special 1953 MG TD Roadster
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
56976@TD25995 Mileage: 7800 showing

Originally equipped with a 1250 cc four cylinder engine, and a four speed manual transmission an example tested by The Motor magazine in 1952 had a top speed of 77 mph and could accelerate from 0–60 mph in 18.2 seconds. The independent suspension was borrowed from the MG "Y" type saloon. This wonderful example has a long list of upgrades that make it easier to drive, and a lot more friendly on the highway at speed. The current engine is a fully rebuilt 1800 cc engine from an MG-B, and the transmission is a five-speed manual gearbox from a Datsun 280Z. All of the front suspension, rear-end and brakes were upgraded to later model MG-B parts and drives dramatically different than any other TD. The cruising speed is now 70 mph at 3500 rpm's.

The last owner bought the car in 1960 from a retired couple from Florida with a Summer home in Tryon, North Carolina. It was like new, and with few miles on it. During the 59 years of ownership, it received a nut and bolt restoration in the 70's, and still retains the lacquer paint job from then. It has a few chips and scrapes, but no areas of concern. It has been stored in a garage since. The previous owner was an accomplished blacksmith and renowned knife maker who specialized in Damascus Steel. He added a cartouche and some special engraving on the three spoke steering wheel. The interior is partially re-finished in replacement black loop carpet with black vinyl MGB seats with white piping. A nice fitting tonneau cover is included, as well as a black fiberglass hardtop. *The side curtains are present,.The vinyl and frame are good, but the lenses are cloudy.*
