Originally from Illinois and a public school teacher, Mildred Memler did not begin painting until her retirement. She and her husband became "full-time trailerists" in 1971, making Mercedes, Texas their home base. They eventually settled in Durham, North Carolina, where she continued her hobby. In 1997, she moved to a senior living facility in West Columbia, South Carolina.
