Charlie Ahman was a well-known painter on Ocracoke Island who immigrated to North Carolina from his native Scotland in the 1960s. He was a self-taught artist whose zest for painting steered him towards whatever painting supplies happened to be available, including paper plates, wood shingles, or cardboard. His folky depictions of the coast made him a cultural fixture in the Ocracoke community for many years.
