By descent through the Reid family.

This pair of portraits depicts George Reid (1759-1849) and his wife, Elizabeth Taylor Reid (1777-1863). Both were born in Forfar, Scotland, and moved to Virginia with their young son in 1801. They first lived in Portsmouth, but later settled in Norfolk. Elizabeth moved to Baltimore, Maryland ten years after the death of her husband.

Stable craquelure; minor scattered retouch visible under UV light; some minor chipping to frames. A note indicates these portraits were restored by Hans Gassman of Richmond, Virginia, in 1970.
