Originally from New York, Malcolm J. Fleming was in publishing prior to devoting himself to his artwork in retirement. He moved to Bald Head Island in 1984 and was active in local conservation planning. Fleming also was instrumental in founding the North Carolina Decoy Collectors and Carvers Association and started the Ducks Unlimited chapter in the area.
