Lot 1330
Civil War Issue Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
The ricasso stamped COLLINS & CO / HARTFORD / CONN / 1862, the retailer's name, "Hunt & Goodwin," is etched below, both sides of the 32.5 in. steel blade are etched with ornate scrolls and patriotic motifs, the grip wrapped with rayskin and secured with brass wire; the pommel is engraved with a custom Union shield and an additional shield is left blank for personalization below the scabbard's throat; the scabbard's drag engraved with a US and eagle motif.

Washington retailers Hunt & Gordon only sold swords during the Civil War, making their surviving wares particularly scarce today.

Original surfaces throughout; some skin loss where the grip meets the guards; a top wire is loose below the pommel; deep age patina to all brass elements; the leather scabbard is separated with some loss between the second suspension ring and the drag, rendering the scabbard shorter than the blade.
