This composition is similar to those by Jacob de Backer (Antwerp, ca. 1540/45 - ca. 1595). Forced to flee the burning of Sodom, Lot and his daughters escape and take refuge in a safe clearing beyond the city walls. Lot's wife, visible in the mid-ground, is turned into a pillar of salt after looking back at the city.
