Page Cary was born in Los Angeles, California. She studied at the California School of Fine Arts, the Art Students League of New York, and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. She exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the New York World's Fair in 1939. One of Cary's charming scenes of American life, Fishstand, is in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

The present work depicts a gathering of colorful characters before the Williamsville, Virginia post office and general store. The local campaigning politician is hawking his merits before a largely indifferent crowd.
