Mel grew up in Chicago, while in high school he was apprenticed to Alphonso Iannelli, who had worked with Frank Lloyd Wright during his time in Chicago. Mel attended the Art Institute of Chicago, and after graduating, also taught art courses there. His family relocated to New Mexico in 1972, where they opened a gallery in Madrid, featuring his work and works by other New Mexico artists.
