WWII Commemorative Launching Plaque for (U.)S.S. Stokes

Consisting of a wooden oval with decorated with gold paint against a velvet ground as follows: "S. S. Stokes Launched August 31st. 1944 Wilmington, N. C. / Mrs W. D. Woodall Sponsor / Maids of Honor Mrs M. M. Armory, Mrs S. L. Vaughn>; the champagne bottle neck from the launching is present with a length of silk ribbon.

The U.S.S. Stokes was named after western North Carolina's Stokes County. She served as an armed transport in the Pacific and participated in the late war campaigns against Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

Losses to the felt ground; some fracturing and discoloration to the silk; overall good condition.
