Lot 232
An Antique Belgian Still Life Painting with Lilies
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Oil on canvas, signed and dated "Jane Herbo / Août 1906" at lower left, inscribed "Vive Ste Louise! / á Marraine" above signature, the stretcher with faint stamp fo Ateliers Mommen of Brussels, presented in a later gilt frame with ornate composition ornament.

Frame dimensions 36 x 33.75 in.

From the Estate of the late Ruth J. Hope, DeBordieu Colony, Georgetown, South Carolina

The signature and inscription bear resemblance to those by Leon Herbo, a Belgian genre and portrait painter. Perhaps this was painted by a family member of the artist.

The Ateliers Mommen was founded in 1853 and developed into an important gathering spot for artists of the 19th century up through today.

Some paint rubbing and loss along lower edge of canvas, just above the frame; no evidence of retouch or restoration visible under UV light; minor shrinkage cracks to frame.
