Meiji period (1868-1912), silk and metallic threads on silk, this tall vertical silk wall hanging was probably created for court display due to its very fine and varied embroidery stitch techniques as well as subject, it features the Edo period shogunate Tokugawa family crest at the top surrounded by swirling clouds above a
highly animated dragon with face in high relief embroidery encircling the scared sword Kusanagi no tsurugi, one of the three imperial regalia of the Japanese emperor, the reverse appears to be lined, framed without cover.

Sight size 82 x 33 in.; Frame dimensions 86 x 35.5 in.

Some horizontal tears; thinning of silk ground; some pulls and lifting to threads of embroidery; some dirt and dust to surface; brocade mounting has wear, darkening to silk in areas, some creases, and some pulls to silk.
