Prosper Pierre-Louis was a prominent member of the Saint Soleil School, a commune of self-taught artists living in a rural area near Port-au-Prince. His father was a Voodoo priest, houngan, and Pierre-Louis grew up helping with preparations for many of the religious ceremonies. The painting on offer here is one of his sought compositions featuring mystical loas (lwas) floating with suns and snakes against a brightly colored patterned ground.
