Postwar Robert E. Lee Cabinet Card by Matthew Brady
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Taken in 1866 when the famous subject was president of Washington College (later, Washington & Lee University); the mount imprinted "Brady, Washington, D. C." with penciled manuscript "Confed. Gen. Robert E. Lee" inscribed above, no backmark. The card has been taped by the edges to a mat above that has been cut so as to hide the pencil inscription. Presented in a late 20th century shadowbox giltwood frame.

Card 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 in.; Frame 13 1/2 x10 1/2 in.

A well-known image of Lee that is enhanced by having come from a known sitting with the Civil War's most famous photographer.

Good tonal contrasts and fine appearance; subtle creases in top right and lower left; the image has been taped to the mat; removal, if desired, should be performed by a conservator.
