English born Howard Hill immigrated to New York in the 1860s. He is best known as a sporting and genre artist and exhibited at the National Academy of Design.

Hill was the grandfather of the noted illustrator, Norman Rockwell. Despite the fact that the two never met, Rockwell was fond of his grandfather's paintings and displayed one of his sporting pictures in his studio.
