Carl Kahler studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and for a few years in Paris. He emigrated to Australia in 1885, where he painted three pictures of the Melbourne Cup. His best known work, My Wife's Lovers, was completed in 1891 after moving to the United States. This painting featured a total of forty-two cats and cemented his success as a cat painter. Kahler's career was tragically cut short when he died in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

Frame with small area of loss and later gold paint; stable craquelure; small spot of retouch to tree line visible under UV light; yellowed varnish.
