Dubbed "The Grandma Moses of New Hope," Jean Halter was a self-taught primitive artist. She was born in Pittsburgh and raised in South Carolina. In 1951 she and her husband moved to the New Hope area and opened a restaurant. She used her paintings to decorate the dining room and developed a devoted base of collectors for her charming folk art scenes.
