Joseph Hirsch was a New York and Pennsylvania artist whose subject matter is usually Social Realist in nature. He also embraced naturalism while many of his contemporaries were turning to abstraction in their work. Hirsch attended the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art, and he received many accolades during his career, including the Walter Lippincott Award at the Annual Exhibition of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as well as a Woolley Fellowship to study for a year in Paris.
