Eugene Samuel Reeser (PA, 1862-1922), Allegory of Summer and Winter (Two Works)
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Gouache and watercolor, each signed and dated "E. S. Reeser 1920," both also signed and inscribed with artist details to verso, matted and framed.

Sight size 24 x 12 in.; Frame dimensions 34 x 21 3/4 in.

Eugene Samuel Reeser was a painter and photographer who lived and practiced in Reading, Pennsylvania. He was known especially for his landscapes, portraiture, and paintings of animals, so these allegorical scenes are a deviation from his typical subject matter.

The compositions offered here closely mirror two allegorical scenes by Austrian artist, Hans Zatzka (1859-1945). Though is unclear which paintings were completed first due to some lack of dating, it is likely that Zatzka's were completed first and that Reeser was able to observe the Zatzka works.

Overall good condition; few faint stains and several minor, light surface scuffs; sheets mounted to cardboard and partially affixed to matting by artist; not under glass.
