Born in Italy, Joseph Gionfriddo immigrated to the United States at the age of 13. His mother and father were already settled in Hartford, Connecticut. Although he had apprenticed as a barber while in Italy, Gionfriddo was able to enter high school in Connecticut. He was able to nurture his early artistic talents, studying under James Goodwin McManus and Guy Wiggins in Lyme, Connecticut. He was awarded a residence at the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation in 1932.
The present painting is a very good work in the manner of the Dutch masters.
Stable minor craquelure; small paint flake in lower right quadrant; tacking holes visible along top edge of canvas; rubbing and flaking to frame.
