H. Lee Hirsche studied under Josef Albers at the Yale School of Fine Arts. He taught design for two years at the University of Texas before accepting a professorship at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts in 1957.

This painting is an interesting transitional work bridging his geometric oil paintings to an ink wash landscape technique he later perfected.
