after Antoine Louis Barye (French, 1796-1875), Bronze Panther Devouring Rabbit
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Patinated bronze, depicting a sinuous panther devouring a rabbit on a rocky outcrop, signed "Barye" to base, the whole mounted to a low green marble plinth.

4 1/2 x 10 x 4 1/8 in.

Louis Barye is known for his naturalistic depictions of animals in action, and were often derived from studying animals at the Paris zoo. In his compositions, wild animals attack their prey, combining naturalistic rendering of their anatomy with movement. Conceptually, the piece exhibits a strong sense of the Romantic Period in its emphasis on shocking the audience.

Good estate condition, minor small chips to corners of marble plinth.
