Walter Louis Jones was born in Durham, North Carolina. He received his BA from East Carolina University and his MA in Fine Art from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. He is best known for his hyper-realism and fascination with the natural world.

Jones has been widely exhibited, including a solo show at the San Francisco Museum of Art in 1986. His works can be found in a number of collections, including the Asheville Art Museum and the Springfield Art Museum. His large 7-foot-tall portrait of his tabby cat, Emily, on a pedestal is the most photographed and Instagrammed work in the collection of the Foundation for the Carolina's lobby in Charlotte.
