Maria Gardner's Framed Needlework Sampler, 1823

Worked in multi-color silk threads on loose linen grounds, upper register with six lower and upper case alphabet rows, with pious verse to center surmounting maker's name and date, "Maria Gardner's / Work (?) Years of Her / Age 1823," flanked by symmetrical floral, tree, figural, and basket motifs within a pink and green queen's stitch border. Conservation mounted in a maple corner block frame.

Previously sold by M. Finkel & Daughter, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; see Samplings Volume II, 1992, page 21.

Typed notation affixed to verso stating that Maria was born to Anna and Jacob H. Gardner on June 19, 1815 and baptized at the First Reformed Church of Philadelphia. Their residence was listed as 311 Vine Street.

Good estate condition; not examined out of frame.
