William Harold Styers was born in Kings Mountain, North Carolina and grew up in Greensboro. After serving as an airplane mechanic in WWII, he moved to Durham with his family. After a successful career in the insurance business, he retired to a farm in Chatham County to raise Arabian horses. He was also able to devote much time and his considerable talent to painting.

In 1997, Styers illustrated and published Hark the South: A Time Remembered and a Sentimental Journey outlining the mid-20th century history of UNC-Chapel Hill's famous football team. This painting captures the dynamism of Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice, the Asheville born MVP tailback for UNC-Chapel Hill. Justice went on to play halfback in the NFL for the Washington Redskins. He was inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame.

Some rubbing to edges of canvas; some unknown darks drips to surface; light foxing to verso.
