William Lester Stevens was originally from Rockport, Massachusetts. He studied at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts School under Edmund Tarbell, Frank Benson and others. In 1921, Stevens was a founding member of the Rockport Art Association with his friend and fellow artist, Aldro Hibbard. He taught briefly at Boston University and Princeton. He later spent time in North Carolina where he gave lessons and held one-man shows in Charlotte and Asheville.
