William Wallace Gilchrist, Jr. was born into an artistic family. His father, William Wallace Gilchrist, Sr., was a talented musician and composer. Although not musically inclined, William Jr. did show early talent for painting and drawing. He received his formal training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, studying under such talent as Cecilia Beaux, Thomas Anshutz and William Merritt Chase. Gilchrist also studied with Winslow Homer during summer vacations in Maine.

Good estate condition; a few minor spots of retouch visible under UV light.
