Patrick von Kalckreuth, born Patrick Dunbar, was the son of a German naval officer. After a brief career as a seaman, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin where he studied under Hugo Schnars-Alquist. He is known for his maritime paintings, many of which depict the North Sea. This painting is an early example of his work, before he adopted his stepfather's surname in 1931.
