Walter Keul was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States. He settled in North Carolina and was granted his citizenship in 1957. He began his painting career as a portrait artist, but soon found greater success painting large murals for churches. His paintings of scenes along the Jordan River are found in Baptist churches throughout the southeast, from Arkansa to Florida to West Virginia.
