Stretcher size 24 x 20 in.; Frame dimensions 29 1/2 x 25 1/2 in.

Marian Williams Steele studied at the Trenton School of Industrial Arts, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia. She had studios in both Cambridge and Gloucester, Massachusetts and maintained close friendships with fellow artists including Mary Bryan and Emile Gruppe. She also traveled frequently to California and earned portrait commissions from numerous celebrities. She exhibited frequently throughout her career at such venues as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Salmagundi Club, the Los Angeles Museum of Art, and the Rockport Art Association.
