Consisting of an Autograph Letter Signed "Chas. J Bridgman," one page, 8 x 5 in., reading as follows: Washington D. C. May 12 - '65 / Lieut. Genl Lee, General: I have the honor of addressing you, sir, for the purpose of respectfully requesting your autograph, for which I should be greatly obliged. Something you may at your convenience favor me."; plus, Lee's signature, "R E Lee," on a second sheet of matching stationery. Both items are framed behind a mat with a reproduced image of General Lee.

Frame 13-1/2 x 21 in.

Private Collection, High Point, North Carolina

The gentleman requesting Lee's signature in this instance was Charles Jennings Bridgman (1841-1895), a known American artist specializing in genre paintings. Born in Alabama, Bridgman's family relocated to New York just before the Civil War. Why he addressed General Lee here as "Lieut. General" will forever be a mystery lost to time.

The Bridgman letter is in fine condition, however the Lee signature is heavily faded from years of exposure to sunlight. The surrounding mat and adjacent Lee portrait are also light struck.
