Karl Kappes was born Charles Kappes in Zanesville, Ohio. He began his formal art studies at the McMicken School of Design in Cincinnati. He continued his studies in New York with William Merritt Chase, Paris with Benjamin Constant at the Academie Julian, and ending at the Royal Academy in Munich. It was in Germany that he adopted the name "Karl."

He finally returned to Ohio and settled in Zanesville, where he opened a studio and served as a mentor and instructor to many artists in the area. From 1904 until 1920, in addition to his own work, he was art director at the Weller Pottery. He exhibited extensively throughout his career, included in shows at National Academy of Design, the Royal Academy in Munich, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Toledo Museum of Art.
