Jules Olitski was among the first generation of Color Field painters. He rose to prominence in the New York art world following a 1958 exhibition at French & Co. which also included work by Morris Louis, Barnett Newman, Kenneth Noland and David Smith.

Olitski is championed for his dynamic technique of applying paint to canvas, and in later work, to unusual surfaces. His surfaces are tactile - thick and viscous, all while retaining a delicate interplay of colors.

Paintings by Olitski are included in such prominent public collections as Tate Britain, London; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.
