Jean Vitau began his career in his uncle's Paris atelier. When he came to the United States in the 1960s, he brought with him the knowledge he acquired and his European design sensibilities. He also carried with him the innovative design for a bar setting, later named Gemlok, thus having a great influence on jewelry design for years to come. Gemlok became the company name and is carried on by his family today.
Aside from his practical innovations, Vitau was also heavily inspired by color and nature and many of his pieces reflect those ideas.
The Gemlok setting can be seen in this necklace.
