New England Chippendale Bonnet Top Mahogany Carved Chest on Chest

Attributed to Massachusetts, circa 1780, white pine secondary, two part form, broken arched bonnet top with applied molding, three urn and flame twist finials, upper central drawer with relief shell carving, flanked by two small drawers, above four graduated flush drawers set within a cock beaded surround, stiles with applied fluted columns and chamfered corner, the top of the base with an applied conforming molding for top case, the lower case with four graduated flush drawers again with cock beaded surround, raised on tall straight bracket feet with spur.

85.5 x 41.5 x 22.25 in., upper case width 38 in.

Top board of base in pencil script signed "S. F. Smith Newton Center Mass." Mr. Smith is the author of "My Country Tis of Thee" and lived in Newton, Massachusetts.

Interior bonnet molding replaced; crack and repair to left scroll facing of bonnet; hairline crack and later stabilizing block to pediment under central plinth; some drawer runners rebuilt; brasses are possibly original (in original holes); the upper case with two lower horizontal back boards likely replaced; left upper side of case with vertical spline; left lower case with tight shrinkage crack; right upper side of case with tight shrinkage crack; right lower side of case with vertical spline; the bracket feet appear original (three with stabilized shrinkage cracks).
